Hi there, if you've landed on this blog, then I can safely say that you want to learn a little bit more about me and how I became the wedding photographer that I am today. I've been doing wedding photography for over 15 years now, and it all started how most wedding Photographers start. It started when I first got my DSLR, and I started doing wildlife photography, a friend of mine reached out as their wedding photographer had let them down a few days before their wedding. She reached out asking if I would feel comfortable capturing their wedding day. Obviously, this was a massive shock to me as Shooting a wedding was something I'd never done before, and it's completely different to Shooting wildlife. However, that being said I accepted, and went into the wedding as scared as I'd ever been. I can remember Shooting that wedding, and not having a clue what I was doing, but I knew that after the end of that day, I wanted to hand my notice in at my work, and become a full-time wedding photographer. The bug had got me, and 15 years later, here I am having the honour of capturing hundreds of loved-up couples over the years, and I truly wouldn't look back. If someone had told me years ago, that I would be doing wedding photography as my job, I would've honestly laughed at them. But having the honour, and pleasure, of meeting so many amazing loved-up couples, and capturing their love story as it unfolds is truly a blessing, and each day reminds me of how lucky I am to be doing what I am. Before becoming a wedding photographer, I use to look at all the wedding photographers that were out there. I couldn't quite understand how they could charge what they were charging. You've no doubt had the conversation with your partner yourself, and how much wedding photography is. I didn't truly appreciate why, until I became a wedding photographer myself. After being a wedding photographer in Nottingham for 15 years, it's now opened my eyes as to why wedding photographers charge what they do. It's really true what they say, you do get what you pay for. However, most people think that a Photographer just turns up for the day, takes a few photos, and that's it. What people don't take into consideration is, the hours, if not days, of work that goes into creating the special moments after your big day. Having a wedding photographer that can capture the unique moments of your day, and showcase the True essence of the day is super important. These images will be the only thing left from your day to look back on, and reflect with your loved ones in years to come. A well-crafted image can spark a truly emotional memory, that can be shared with friends, and family, years after the big day happens. I'm not just a wedding photographer. I'm also a storyteller, and having someone there who can take images to show your day in the most natural way, is super important for any of my couples. It's also super important that you feel comfortable, and confident, around your Photographer. Out of all the supplies that you will have there, your Photographer, is the only one that will be there from start to finish. The reasons why my couples decide to book me is simple, they can be themselves around me, and can relax, knowing that their day is in good hands. My approach is very relaxed, and the most important thing for me, is to make sure that my couples are enjoying their day as much as possible, without being in front of a camera for hours. Even though I am a documentary wedding photographer, I would say that my approach is pretty much, out of sight, out of mind. With having this approach, means I can capture more natural images of friends and family enjoying the day. It also means, that people don't have to stand in front of a camera for hours, making that awkward smile that we all hate so much. Well, I can share this with you and I can't wait to tell you the story of this beautiful couple who got married at Maryculter House Hotel in Scotland. Being a Nottingham wedding photographer, I have had the chance to shoot at some truly beautiful locations but Scotland has always been on my list. It 's not very often this happens, but I have been lucky enough to get the script that was read on the day of this wedding. And to be honest, I do not want to change anything in this as she did such an amazing job, but I also want you to feel like you were actually there the day of the wedding. They are sharing today with all the special people in their lives and they want you all to enjoy today as much as they intend to, to that end the ceremony is going to be informal & relaxed making it one you will all remember. Catriona & Craig who are here for the best reason ever ….. to get married! They hope you enjoy this most beautiful setting on the banks of the River Dee, the stunning scenery & spectacular outside space. No matter how near or far you travelled, each of you are important because Craig & Catriona invited you to witness & share their wedding day. Everyone take a moment to look all around, there will be people you have known your whole life, some you haven’t seen for years, some you have never met before. Across the course of today, and by the end of tonight, I hope these families and friends will have all mixed & shared in the happiness of these two who have brought you all together today. Wedding ceremonies take many different forms; couples may choose to exchange their vows in a religious ceremony, others in the presence of a registrar. Catriona & Craig decided to celebrate their relationship with a Humanist wedding ceremony, they feel it is personal, best represents who they are & how they live their lives. Having chosen the content & words for their ceremony, selected the music & vows, means it will be uniquely special to them. Humanism is not a religion - it’s a very old and very simple philosophy that represents the views of hundreds of millions of people around the world. There are lots of definitions out there, but as we say here in Bonnie Scotland, “We’re all Jock Tamson’s bairns” – meaning we’re all the same under the skin! We hope that each of you, whatever your beliefs, will kick back & enjoy this occasion. Today is about things that bring us together in life rather than the things that might divide us, the most important being love. This is the best kind of celebration when we witness two individuals coming together, strengthening their bond & celebrating their love for one another. The ceremony will put the love and respect Catriona & Craig have for each other at the forefront. Later they will make the most significant commitment & vows to each other & become united. Our bridal party is made up of a great bunch of family & longstanding friends all looking gorgeous. Craig & Catriona, you are on the threshold of a new and exciting chapter in your relationship, but it is what’s happened in the past that led you to this significant point, so, let’s take a moment to reflect upon some of the events that have shaped your journey so far. It was just before midnight on the 1st February 2018 Catriona crashed into Craig’s car on Union Street, Catriona tried not to cry looking at this "cool looking surfer" only to later find out Craig can’t swim! Craig thought Catriona was a "muppet," They exchanged details & next morning via polite texts they agreed not to involve insurance. What started as conversations about fixing his car quickly turned into bonding over our shared love of Banff and Lake Louise in Canada, where Craig was planning a snowboarding trip. From that day on, we never stopped talking & the messages became flirtier. Instead of saying good night, we’d text until one of us fell asleep, only to wake up to each other’s messages. I kept checking with my friends to make sure I wasn’t imagining things, wondering if Craig was flirting too. To this day, he insists he was “just being nice.” Craig was offshore when Catriona met his grandparents to sort out his car repairs. Granny immediately liked Catriona & even suggested they went on a date, not realizing this had already been planned for 2 weeks later. At Catriona’s flat she burnt the chips, and had a little tiff within five minutes, but we felt so comfortable together. We went out for drinks at Orchid afterwards, and Craig came back to my place the next day. Craig returned from his snowboarding trip to Banff they officially became a couple. He brought maple syrup & matching Canada wooly hats and a cuddly toy “Albert” that still sits on our bed, Easter 2018 Craig met Catriona’s parents for the first time. Dad, Billy, loved Craig’s car, though didn’t know it was due to the car they had met. Catriona found it funny that they were dressed almost identically. Catriona was in hospital with a broken ankle, Craig texted calling her the clumsiest person he’d ever met, but said he loved me anyway. June 2018 was their first holiday camping to Skye. Catriona forgot the air bed pump so slept in the car the first night. We were bitten by midges and had to pack up early due to a storm, but we had the best time, and Craig enjoyed his first tent holiday. Craig practically moved in with Catriona & bridesmaid Abby. Even when he went home to his own place he often came back a few hours later. Her neighbours must have hated his car’s loud exhaust! Although quickly after meeting, we moved in together, signing a six-month lease just in case things didn’t work out. Deep down, we knew that we would love being together in our own home and in March 2020 just before lockdown, they moved to Ellon. As key workers during COVID both continued working, Catriona as supply teacher from home whilst Craig went to work. Being away from and not seeing family was tough but they grew closer as their own “little family.” And Solidified their wee team. Craig helped Catriona navigate multiple applications, interviews, and rejections and eventually, she managed to secure a permanent job. Hobbies enjoyed together vary from visiting castles & wildlife parks, camping & holidays, moving the mattress into the living room and having boxset days, dog sitting for friends and family, baking, footgolf, bingo, nightly wordle time and annoying each other. As much as Craig & Catriona love their home, they like nothing better than getting away, holidays can be anywhere. City breaks to Barcelona & Berlin, camping trips to Skye, Tarland, Fort William & Manchester, UK trips to Aviemore & Chester, journeys across the globe to Dubai, Krakow & Calpi in Spain and both are super excited to be heading to Banff and Lake Louise for their honeymoon—a place that brought them closer. The proposal came on 13th November 2022 after Craig had been scheming with the parents, Catriona was busy feeding the ducks at Aden Country Park when she turned around Craig was on one knee with a ring. Shocked, it took me a few moments (and some expletives) before Catriona finally said "yes." From there wedding planning started, and they now stand before us hand in hand on their wedding day, radiating pure happiness about to embark on their new chapter. I asked them to tell me what they love about each other & like you in a moment, they will hear these words for the first time. Catriona told me this was hard, we’ve been through so much together & every challenge has made us stronger as a couple. It feels like I can’t fully articulate how much Craig means to me. When we met I was sworn off any new relationship, I was determined to focus solely on getting my First Class Honours – & she did - but fate had other plans. Catriona told friends she didn’t want to end up with someone who worked offshore or played golf – she got both & wouldn’t have Craig any other way. Meeting Craig was a complete coincidence, but it was the best thing, everything changed. His family welcomed me with open arms, I felt like I had roots for the first time. This quote is particularly true for him and I felt it so early on ‘Home is not where you are from, It is where you belong Some of us travel the whole world to find it, Others find it in a person’ There are so many little things I love about him; His eyes light up when he smiles or laughs. When he leaves in the morning & I’m still in bed, he props a pillow against my back so it feels like he’s still next to me. He might look tough, but deep down, he’s a massive softie for the people he loves. I have called him a “teddy bear” since the day we met because I saw through his tough exterior right away. He’s unintentionally funny, especially when he says things without thinking. I’ve grown up with Craig by my side, always quietly supporting & pushing me to be a better version of myself. He calls me out when I’m being bratty or hangry, early in our relationship, my mum said we were “well-suited because he challenges me while always wanting the best for me,” and I think that’s so true. Craig truly makes everyday life meaningful, he’s brought so much joy, love & strength into my life, I couldn’t ask for a better partner to face the future with or singing karaoke in the car! Craig said expressing my feelings has never been easy, I find it hard to explain just how much Catriona means to me and how much I appreciate having her in my life. I was all for the easy life and being single was the way for me – or so I thought! I wouldn’t change her for the world or ever go back to those ways . When we met all I basically did was go offshore or play golf & the PlayStation in my room at my Granny’s. I was never one really to go visit or even speak to anyone. Catriona has challenged me in many ways, thanks to Catriona relationships improved and I see more of both my parents and wider family. When I leave her sleeping when I go to work I tuck her in & put a pillow behind her back to mimic me because I know it makes her sleep better and I don’t have a grumpy Catriona ha ha ha. There are so many things I love about her: Her smile when she is happy or when I have made her happy lights up my day. We both love dogs and ensure that each other sees one while we are out, can’t wait to get our own. She always makes the little tasks enjoyable at home and out, coming to walk around the golf course with her book to keep me company. She helps me through all the good times and helps me more than she is aware of. Catriona will support me no matter what silly ideas or rubbish I came out with. She calls me out when needed, and knows how to deal with me and my childish ways. As the old cliché goes Catriona is genuinely the love of my life. I would like to introduce Catriona’s Godfather David, he will be reading the poem ‘Marry Your Best Friend’ by N'Tima Marry your best friend, I do not say that lightly Really, truly, find the strongest happiest friendship in the person you fall in love with Someone who speaks highly of you Someone you can laugh with The kind of laughs that make your belly ache, and your nose snort The embarrassing, earnest, healing kind of laughs Wit is important Life is too short not to love someone who lets you be a fool with them. This is a strong knot symbolising the strength of love & commitment for each other This knot will serve as a beautiful keepsake of today, hold it safe as a symbol of your individual love for the other and in respect of your joining. Quaich  To finish off their ceremony & to further reinforce these bonds made Craig & Catriona are going to have a traditional Scottish welcoming by drinking from a Quaich. Drinking from a quaich is part of ancient traditions of hospitality from the Celtic honour system, whoever had shared a cup could not do injury to the other, hence the name ‘loving cup’ King James VI of Scotland gifted Anne of Denmark such a cup in honour of their marriage in 1589, since then, many couples have celebrated their nuptials with a first drink from the loving cup. Drinking from the loving cup symbolises a commitment to share everything that life brings to you. Hi everyone, and thank you for taking the time to take a read of yet another one of my blogs. This one, I feel is a little more special, why you ask? Since starting my photography, I have always looked up to them that get to shoot in some of the most beautiful locations this world has to offer. From weddings that happen in Africa, all the way to the ones that happen in the Alps. The images always look amazing, I'm sure you have seen the images. And when I started out over seven years ago, I made it a goal of mine to shoot another wedding in a different country. I will be honest, I didn't really care where at the time, as I knew that trying to get a wedding booked in a different country was going to take a lot of hard work. That being said, I was not going to let it stop me from pushing forward and working towards that goal. After a few bumps in the road, and from a few couples that did get in touch, but obviously wanted someone with more experience I finally got the message that I had been waiting for. I can remember it like it was yesterday, and I honestly don't think it will be a message that I will forget anytime soon. It was a wet Saturday night and as most people do on the weekend, I had taken a trip out to go and get a pizza from Dominos with my partner and while looking over Facebook I got a random message pop up on WhatsApp. "Hi Jordan, we are looking at getting married at Lake Como in Italy and was wondering were you free?" One thing I can remember is I dropped my phone in shock, but I was worried that my hopes were going to be dropped again. However, after a few messages I soon realised that this wasn't a joke, but in actual fact I had captured a family friends wedding and they were serious about having me. I had finally done it, I had got a wedding out in Italy of all places, and let me tell you, it was STUNNING!!! When taking the booking for Italy, I knew that there were going to be a lot of hard work well before the wedding itself, but if I'm being honest, I was not prepared. I went in blind, I can't even lie, but the way I look at things, everyday is a school day and within the business I'm forever learning and looking at ways to improve and this was 100% a learning curve. I have had the chance to go to many stunning places this world has to offer, but i've always gone with someone. This trip, was going to be my first on my own and i was nervous. It's one thing missing a flight or forgetting something if your just going on your holidays, it doesn't really matter does it, but add in the fact that YOU are responsible from capturing the most important day of someone's life and them stress levels hit a new time hight. I cant even start to tell you how many times i checked to make sure i was at the right gate and that i had everything i needed. It wasn't until i was finally on the plane that i started to relax a little, but then it dawned on me that i had a whole new set of problems once that plane landed. I now had to find trains, and in another country, i mean what's the worst that can happen right? I am really glad you asked. Finding the train was the easy part, and as it turns out so is getting the ticket. The hard part was knowing when to get off and trying to fight the fact that you have been up for well over 15 hours and trying to stay awake so you don't miss where you're supposed to be getting off. Rest assured, i didn't miss my stop and once i finally got to Lake Como it was definitely worth the trip. Fast forward a few days and the wedding has been a huge success and I am now waiting for the train to take me back to the airport. I get my tickets, and wait for the train. It pulls up and i get on a load my bags above me. This is when things start to get a little interesting. So what i haven't told you all, is in Italy once you have got your ticket for the train, you are supposed to validate them with the little yellow boxes that are at the end of the platforms for the train you are on. Can you see where this is going? So the train that i had got on this particular morning in my rush and thinking about the airport, I had not validated my ticket. I didn't know this was going to be a problem until the guy a few seats in front of me had also not validated his ticket. It turns out that if you don't do this, you can get slapped with a big fine. It now became apparent to me, that i had to play dead. I'm not even kidding, for the whole trip i made out that i was asleep and lucky for me, the other passenger was kicking off that much that he didn't end up looking over my ticket. Is this the first time you've planned a wedding? For most people, it is. But rest assured we are here to help with one of the most common questions we get asked at Jordans photography. Most couples planning there day have no idea where to start, or the cost of wedding suppliers until they start looking, and I think for most people is can come as a surprise. With so many wedding photographers around Nottingham, you may be asking yourself as to why we all charge vastly different prices. After 8 years of shooting weddings all over the UK and abroad, I wanted to share my view on this subject. So I suppose the first question you would be asking yourself is, What is the average price of a wedding photographer in the UK? I've done a little searching for you all to save you a little time. But in my research, I found that the average price for a wedding photographer here in the UK is approximately £1500 - £2000. This number has remained the same for the past few years with only minimal change. The next question I can hear you all asking is, So why is there such a wide range of cost amongst wedding photographers and wedding photography packages? This is a hard question to answer so I'm going to try and break it down into a few little sections. Firstly we know that the average wedding photographer is £1500 - £2000 but there are also photographers out there that charge £3000+ and at the other end of this we also have photographers that charge £500. The same can be said for everyday items. Let's use cars as an example here. So we have a low range, mid-range, and high range. A low-range car might cost £2000 but for someone who's just passed their test, this would be perfect for them. A mid-range car might cost £5000-£9000 Now this might be for someone thats been driving for a few years and feels that now is the right time to get something that's in a better condition than their last car. And then we have the high end, and we are talking £100,000+. Now there are a lot of factors that come into play with wedding photography, like most services. The biggest difference I see with a lot of photographers is the experience they offer. Photographers who charge at the top end normally have a lot of experience in shooting weddings, have great reviews and are well-established in their field. Photographers at the bottom end tend to have less experience and are looking at building their portfolio. Does this mean that they are no good photographers at the cheaper end of the scale? Absolutely not! I can tell you that when I first started doing wedding photography, I was charging £300. And the reason for this was to build up my portfolio and get my name out there as a wedding photographer. You will find that there will be a lot of new starters charging something similar to this and there's honestly nothing wrong with this at all. At the end of the day, everyone has to start somewhere right? If someone is charging £300-£500 a wedding they need to be shooting more weddings than someone that's charging £1500. Three times as many to be exact. We also have to remember that a lot of wedding photographers out there are full-time, and this is their only income, and normally with a family to support in the process. Should the price of a photographer be the underlying factor in booking them or not? Absolutely not! Lets not forget that this day is something that's taken maybe years to plan, and even longer dreaming about. So, if the photographer your looking at is £300, so long as you have done your research about them and most importantly love their work and personality then book them. The reason I mention personality is because you also have to remember that you will be spending all day with your photographer. The very last thing you would want is to have a photographer with you all day that makes you feel like you can't be yourselves. Trust me when I say this, it will reflect in your final images. And this goes for photographers that are charging £300 or £3000. Wedding photography is also an art form and as we all know, not everyone likes the same art work and this is ok. Take this image below. This image is called Hotly Debated: Phanto. Now some people may like this, and there's some that won't, but if I was to tell you that this very image sold for $6,500,000 you would think I'm crazy right? Don't believe me? Google it. The point I'm trying to make here is wedding photography is the same and what one couple might like at £3000, others might not and that's fine. So why is hiring a wedding photographer SO expensive? Shooting a wedding is a LOT of hard work. A lot of people think that a photographer turns up, shoots the wedding and then that's it. This is a common misconception. But there are an incredible amount of hours that go into everything to do with your wedding. From the moment the enquiry comes in the weeks, if not months after the wedding itself. For me, this is how a typical wedding looks, brace yourself. Enquiry comes in and Zoom call: 1-2 hours Engagement shoot: 5-6 hours including travel Editing Engagement images: 3-4 hours Zoom call to finalise details of the wedding: 1-2 hours Scouting the locations: 2-3 hours The wedding Day:12-13+ hours Travel to wedding 1-4 hours Editing wedding images: 1-2 Days Packing and Delivery 1 hour Are you surprised? On top of all this, there are the emails back and forth with suppliers that may be at your wedding along with the wedding planning of the day to make sure that we are all on the same page and to ensure we all know what we are doing for the day of the wedding. In total, the hours in total for just one wedding is around 40+ hours. So if you're looking at a wedding photographer who is charging £1500, this works out at around £33 per hour, this sounds like an amazing wage doesn't it? But then we have to remember the cost of equipment and insurance that any reliable photographer would have. Then there's marketing, software, education and administrative costs. After taking all this into the picture this brings that number down a lot. But we are still not done, there is the equipment that we use and have to maintain that can cost a small fortune in itself. With charging what I do, I can live JUST about comfortable if that. Let me ask you this, how many wedding photographers do you see driving around in a Lamborghini?
