After doing weddings for over 7 years, it still surprises me how many couples leave booking a wedding photographer only a few months away from their wedding. I would say that once you have your wedding date and venue secured, you really should be looking at a wedding photographer next. Popular wedding photographers are often booked up months or even years in advance. As soon as you have your wedding date and venue confirmed, start researching and reaching out to photographers to secure your preferred date. This will give you the best chance of finding a photographer that fits within your budget, style, and availability. It's also super important that you jump on at least one Zoom call with your photographer. You must make sure that you feel comfortable around your photographer; you're going to be spending all day with them. If you're planning a wedding during peak season (typically May through October), it's even more important to book your photographer early. A little tip that I will share with you all is make a timetable for your photographer of the shots that you would really like. I'm also a big believe on pay cheap, pay twice. This is something that you could maybe live with, with everyday living, but do you really want this for your wedding? Just because a wedding photographer is cheap does not mean you are getting a great deal. This day is one of the biggest days of your life, so you need to have someone who knows what they are doing. Now, while I believe that everyone has to start somewhere ( and I've been there myself ), make sure you keep your eyes open for red flags. Some things to look out for are the following. After finally getting engaged after what may feel like a lifetime, you'll no doubt be getting lots of advice on when you should be looking at booking your vendors. The conflicting advice you get can sometimes make your head spin! But when it comes to wedding photography, how far in advance of your wedding date should you be looking at booking a photographer? Although it can vary for different locations and clients, the average engagement is around 14 months and the average engaged couple books their photographer nine months before the date of the wedding. Every engagement can be shorter or longer, depending on the couple. A great rule of thumb is, if your wedding is less than a year away, you should be taking a good look for a photographer that you feel can capture your day the best. If your wedding is less than nine months away, it should be your top priority in your wedding planning! Why do you need to book your photographer so early? Making sure you get your photographer should be at the top of your list, as these will be booked up fast. Unlike some other wedding vendors, such as florists, tux rentals, caterers, etc. Photographers can typically only book one wedding per day. So when the photographer books a popular date, that date is taken and becomes unavailable for other couples. And as you can imagine, the photographers with more experience and a better reputation get booked earlier than others, so if you have a preference for a photographer, don’t wait! Prime Dates Prime dates for weddings will vary by location, but in general, Saturdays are the most popular day to get married. The time of the year can make dates more desirable as well, with most couples preferring the summer and fall months to marry. Make sure to research when the “busy season” is for wedding photographers in your area so you know what dates are likely to book up fastest. Holidays Holidays, especially those that are on a Friday or a Monday that afford people an extended weekend, are very popular dates and will book quickly. A question I get asked about a lot when it comes to planning a wedding is about the timekeeping of the day. This can be a hard question to answer, as no two weddings are the same. However, I will do my best to answer this as best as possible for you all, and hopefully it will help you all with the planning of the morning of your day. What your photographer should be doing When you reach out to a wedding photographer, the planning for them has already started. They are already checking to make sure they have your date free, they are already on Google looking at your location and getting ideas to make your day extra special. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what a photographer will be doing, but what I'm going to do is break down the timings of the day, as I get a lot of questions about time management for the morning of a wedding. So let's get started! Let's break this down a little more. Researching The Location If possible, visit the wedding venue ahead of time so you know exactly where you will be taking your images. This always saves a little time on the big day, and it's even better if your photographer can come with you. A good photographer will try to do a pre-shoot so they can get a feel for what the lighting may be like on the day of your wedding. Make sure to have two or three locations where you can go for your images, so you can lead people directly to these spots and not waste time wandering around. This can make the difference between being away for an hour with your photographer and being away for half an hour. Know the wedding schedule Your photographer will be responsible for capturing all the important wedding moments from your big day. This can range from the bride and groom's morning preparations to the all-important first kiss and first dance. So if you can get a detailed copy of the wedding schedule and get this to your photographer, this can help make sure that any important shots won't get missed. One question you may get asked by your photographer is to confirm things like dates, times, finding out where the bride will be getting ready, whether there will be parking close by, dinner times, and the list really does go on and on. Having some sort of idea of the times will help make the day run much smoothly. Here is what a typical wedding day breakdown may look like. Altogether, you should set aside about 2-2.5 hours for your hair & makeup. Typically, bridal prep can vary depending on different reasons, such as: the size of your bridal party the complexity of the hairstyles and makeup for each person travel time between where you get ready and where the ceremony will be held. How many makeup artists are with you for the morning All of these can contribute to the timing for getting ready, which is why it is really important to plan well in advance. The photographer would typically arrive anywhere between 30-40 minutes after your hair and makeup artist arrive. This is so everyone can set up and position the bride in the correct lighting, ready for when the photographer gets there. At this time, it also gives the wedding party the chance to wake up and have something to eat, without a photographer being there with a camera in their face. Details and general candids: 30 minutes Bridesmaids together in robes: 5-10 minutes Bride getting dressed and finishing touches: 20 minutes (wait to put on earrings, jewellery, and shoes until after you’re dressed) The doing up of the dress 5-10 minutes First look with dad/parents: 5-15 minutes (this can be faster if it happens and is coordinated in the same room. If you have to find another place, it will take longer as you will have to move all the participants and tidy the environment.
